Why two supplements, and why the vitamin D twice

It is a fair question, and the overlap is deliberate.

Advanced Multi+ is a complete daily foundation - 23 nutrients covering the ground a varied diet does not always reach. Like any good multivitamin, it includes vitamin D and vitamin K2. What no multivitamin can do is provide a high-strength dose of any single nutrient.

Super Vitamin D+ does exactly that, because vitamin D and vitamin K are the two most worth prioritising through and after menopause. Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium; vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.

Across the two you get 50µg (2,000 IU) of vitamin D3 and 280µg of MenaQ7® K2 a day - half the 100µg daily maximum considered safe for long-term use. Not an accident of stacking two products, but the reason for pairing them.

Bone health: the priority that changes at menopause

Bone is living tissue, broken down and rebuilt continuously throughout life. The balance between the two shifts with age, and for women that shift is most pronounced around and after menopause - which is why bone health moves up the list of long-term priorities at this stage.

Nutrition is one of the levers you have, alongside weight-bearing exercise. Five nutrients across this duo contribute to the maintenance of normal bones: vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium and zinc, plus vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones and cartilage. Vitamin D also contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function - muscle strength and bone strength are not separate problems.

Energy, focus and everyday wellbeing

Tiredness is often the complaint that arrives first and irritates most. It is rarely down to one thing, and no supplement fixes it alone - but nutrient status is one part you can actually address.

Advanced Multi+ provides nine nutrients that contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue: vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12, folate, vitamin C, magnesium and iron. Most of the same nutrients also contribute to normal psychological function and the normal functioning of the nervous system.

The forms matter as much as the presence. Folate is Quatrefolic®, an active form the body uses without converting it first, and B12 is methylcobalamin rather than the cheaper cyanocobalamin. Magnesium comes from Aquamin® marine algae, and iron and zinc are bisglycinates - gentler on the stomach than the sulphates most multivitamins use.

Hormonal activity

Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. Advanced Multi+ provides 2.8mg - 200% of the daily reference intake.

Thyroid function

Iodine from PureSea® seaweed contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. So does selenium.

Hair, skin and nails

Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin, zinc to normal hair, skin and nails, selenium to nails.

Ingredient highlights

Vitamin D3 - 50µg (2,000 IU) across the duo

Vitamin D is the nutrient the UK is most reliably short of - we make it from sunlight on skin, and there is not enough of it from October to March. It contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function, and to the normal function of the immune system. Across the two products you get 50µg (2,000 IU) a day, half the 100µg daily maximum considered safe for long-term use. Both use algal D3, so it is suitable for vegans - which most D3 is not.

MenaQ7® vitamin K2 - 280µg across the duo

Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and it is the natural partner to vitamin D: where vitamin D helps you absorb calcium, vitamin K2 is involved in directing it to the bone. MenaQ7® is the most extensively researched MK-7 form of K2, produced by Lesaffre and the subject of 19 published studies in human health. Please note: vitamin K can interact with anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, so do not take this duo if you are on one, except on your doctor's advice.

Vitamin B6 - regulation of hormonal activity

Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. It also contributes to normal psychological function, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Advanced Multi+ provides 2.8mg - 200% of the daily reference intake - as pyridoxal-5-phosphate, the active form.

Aquamin® magnesium - bones, muscles and psychological function

Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, to normal muscle function, to normal psychological function, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. An unusually broad set of authorised roles for one mineral. Aquamin® is a naturally mineralised magnesium harvested from red algae in the Irish Sea.

Feel much more energetic

Have been taking these multi vitamins for a few weeks and feel much more energetic

Improved sense of wellbeing

I started taking this some months ago and found I had an improved sense of wellbeing within a few days. Last month I decided to skip a month and felt the old anxiety creeping in. I reordered straight away but had to wait a while due to postage time. Once I started the supplement again I felt much calmer within a few days. The supplement definitely has a positive effect.

My vertigo has gone

I suffered from vertigo and saw a video by a doctor that explained that vitamin K2 would help. I started taking Super Vitamin D+ and now my vertigo has gone. It worked!

FAQs

When will I feel the benefits?

Filling the gaps

The first month is about correcting shortfalls rather than feeling transformed. Your body starts drawing on the 23 nutrients in Advanced Multi+, and vitamin D levels begin to build - this is where the gaps common in UK diets, particularly vitamin D, magnesium, iodine and folate, start to close. Some people notice small changes in energy or sleep in the first few weeks. Many notice nothing yet, and that is normal. Bone health works on a much longer timescale than anything you can feel.

Building momentum

Levels at full strength

By the second month you are into steady state. Vitamin D levels take roughly six to eight weeks of consistent daily intake to plateau, so this is the point at which you are getting the full benefit of the high-strength dose rather than still building toward it. If tiredness was part of why you started, this is the more realistic window to judge it - the B vitamins, magnesium, iron and vitamin C contributing to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue work through everyday metabolism, not overnight.

When will I feel the benefits?

Built for the long term

At three months the routine is doing what it was designed for: a consistent daily foundation, with the vitamin D and K2 maintained at a level that supports the maintenance of normal bones over the long term. This is the timescale that matters for bone health - not weeks, but years of consistency. If you have your vitamin D levels checked, three months of daily supplementation is a reasonable point to see the difference reflected in a blood test.
