What can a natural iron supplement help with?

Low energy levels
With low iron levels, it becomes harder for our bodies to make enough haemoglobin to carry oxygen around the body. That can lead to common symptoms of iron deficiency like fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath. A natural iron supplement can help restore healthy levels.
Supporting your immune resilience
Iron plays a vital but often overlooked role in our immune systems. Immune cells, like T cells, need iron to specialise and multiply to fight infections, so even mild shortfalls can affect how you’re feeling from day to day. The best iron supplements can top up healthy levels when you’re not getting enough from your food, or when your body’s demand for iron increases.
Extra support for vegan and vegetarian diets
Research shows that iron absorption is higher in people who eat meat, at around 14-18%, compared to 5-12% in vegetarian diets. That’s because the iron found in animal foods like red meat is easier for our bodies to absorb than the plant-based iron present in beans, nuts and dried fruits. Vegans and vegetarians often use natural iron tablets for extra support.

What makes Iron+ the best iron supplement?
Natural iron supplements are often made with inorganic sources like ferrous sulphate. But that can cause side effects like diarrhoea or constipation because it's hard for the body to absorb. Here’s what makes Iron+ the best iron supplement:
A natural iron supplement that’s gentle on your stomach
Iron+ contains Ultimine™ Koji Fermented Iron, a clinically studied organic formulation of natural iron in koji culture, a type of fungi used in Asian cuisine for over 2,000 years to produce fermented foods like miso, soy sauce and sake.
‘Gold standard’ absorption from plant-based iron
Each natural Iron+ capsule provides a safe, slow-release and whole-food source of vegan iron that is as easy to absorb as traditional iron supplements, without the gastrointestinal side effects. A human study showed that iron absorption from Ultimine™ was comparable to ferrous sulfate, considered a gold standard of iron bioavailability.
Slow-release to avoid harmful iron ‘spikes’
The study also showed that natural iron from Ultimine™ is released more slowly into the blood than iron from ferrous sulfate. This helps minimise iron ‘spikes’ or overload, which can cause oxidative stress, damaging cells and leaving us feeling fatigued.
Daily support for energy, immunity and brain health
As well as supporting energy metabolism, immunity and cognitive health, each natural Iron+ capsule contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and supports healthy cell division.
Plus bioactive vitamin B12 to support energy and mood
Iron+ contains vegan-friendly methylcobalamin, a bioactive form of vitamin B12. Many of us have genes that may make it more difficult for our bodies to convert and absorb vitamin B12. ‘Bioactive’ means that it doesn’t need to be converted in the liver, so your body can use it straight away to support daily energy, a healthy nervous system and psychological function.

What is natural iron and why does the body need it?
Iron is an essential mineral for life. Our bodies can’t make iron, so we have to regularly absorb it from our food. We can absorb natural iron from meat and animal sources, pulses like kidney beans and chickpeas, and nuts and dried fruits, including apricots, raisins and dates, but natural iron from meat is usually much easier to absorb than from plant sources.
Most of the natural iron that we absorb from what we eat is used to make red blood cells and a protein called haemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs around the body. But iron is critical for growing healthy brain cells for memory and learning, and for making important neurotransmitters like dopamine. It’s also vital during pregnancy for foetal development. Plus, iron plays a major role in our immune health, producing and regulating immune cells and signalling molecules that help fight infections.

What are the signs of low iron levels?
Our bodies are really efficient at conserving and recycling iron but about 5 per cent of our daily needs still have to come from what we eat. Low iron levels can lead to anaemia, with symptoms ranging from pale skin to headaches, feelings of fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath. This happens because our body can’t make enough haemoglobin, so there isn’t enough oxygen being carried to our muscles and other tissues.
Many children and adults in the UK aren’t getting their daily recommended amount of iron, according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. The NHS recommends 14.8mg a day for women, compared to just 8.7mg a day for men. For vegans, pregnant women, and women with heavy periods, the gap between the iron they’re getting every day and what they need can be significant. Natural iron supplements are never a replacement for a healthy diet, but they can bring extra support.

A human study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that iron absorption from Ultimine™ was comparable to ferrous sulfate, considered a gold standard of iron bioavailability.
Slow-release iron to avoid spikes
The study also showed that natural iron from Ultimine™ Koji Fermented Iron is released more slowly into the blood than iron from ferrous sulfate. This helps to minimise any ‘spike’ or overload in the body’s iron levels, which can cause oxidative stress, damaging cells and leaving us feeling fatigued.

Iron+ contains Ultimine™ Koji Fermented Iron, which uses a unique way to make vegan iron easier to absorb by naturally storing it in the cells of the Aspergillus oryzae (Koji) fungus.
Koji is a fungi that has been used in Asian cuisine for centuries, used to ferment soy beans to make miso, soy sauce and more. To make Ultimine™ Koji Fermented Iron, the koji culture is grown on rice, and then transferred to a special fermentation medium that contains iron, where the fungi take up the iron and store it. The fungi are harvested and later dried into a powder. This makes the best iron supplement: easy-to-absorb, 100% vegan and gentle on the stomach.

Explore Iron+ and more in our Knowledge Centre
Iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, and is essential for life: it plays a central role in making haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body. But iron is truly a ‘Goldilocks’ nutrient, too, as both too little or too much can lead to health issues.
Although there are many vegetable sources of iron, it's less easy to absorb than the iron we get from eating meat. Learn more about this essential nutrient, and how to make sure you’re getting the right amount.

Natural Iron Supplement FAQs
What to avoid when taking iron tablets?
Avoid drinking tea, coffee or red wine an hour before or after eating a source of natural iron, as the tannins present in these drinks can bind to iron in the intestine, sequestering it and preventing absorption. Foods with high levels of phytic acid, like wholegrain cereals, nuts, seeds and beans, can also stop your body absorbing natural iron from other foods and tablets.
What is the best natural iron to take?
Natural iron is abundant in many foods: not only in meat, but also found in vegetable sources such as legumes, nuts and dried fruits, as well as dark leaf vegetables. However, vegetable sources of iron are less easy to absorb than the iron we get from eating meat. Ferrous sulphate is the most common natural iron supplement, also used in iron-fortified foods. But it often has side effects on the stomach and can give a metallic aftertaste. Koji supplements that contain natural iron have a comparable absorption rate to ferrous sulphate but without the side effects. They also release iron much more slowly, avoiding the risk of ‘spikes’ that can cause oxidative stress and damage the body’s cells.
How can I increase my iron naturally?
We can absorb natural iron from meat and animal sources, pulses like kidney beans and chickpeas, and nuts and dried fruits, including apricots, raisins and dates, but natural iron from meat is usually much easier to absorb than from plant sources.
What are 5 signs of iron deficiency?
Low iron levels can lead to symptoms ranging from pale skin to headaches, feelings of fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath. This happens because our body can’t make enough haemoglobin, so there isn’t enough oxygen being carried to our muscles and other tissues.
What do doctors recommend for low iron?
If you’re concerned that you may have anaemia, be sure to talk to your GP. Your GP will usually do a blood test to find out if the number of red blood cells you have is normal. If it looks like low iron levels are the cause (a condition called iron deficiency anaemia), they will likely recommend a course of iron tablets to replace what you’re missing.
Can I take B12 and iron together?
Yes, it’s safe to take vitamin B12 and iron together. This combination is especially good for supporting vegan diets, which can often be low in both nutrients.
