The supplement that started it all

FutureYou Cambridge started with a question: could we take a natural compound abundant in tomatoes, make it easier to absorb, and prove it could make a meaningful difference to people’s heart health?

Lycopene, the bright red pigment that gives tomatoes their colour, had already attracted scientific interest for its potential cardiovascular benefits. But it’s hard for our bodies to absorb in its raw form. 

In 2002, we developed the answer: LactoLycopene™, a combination of lycopene with whey protein that became an award-winning ingredient backed by £12 million in investment.

In a randomised, placebo-controlled study led by researchers at the University of Cambridge, taking LactoLycopene™ daily was shown to improve blood vessel function in people with cardiovascular disease by 53% after eight weeks, bringing it almost to the same level as the healthy group (Gajendragadkar et al., PLoS One, 2014).  LactoLycopene™ is now available as a daily supplement in Ateronon Heart+.

That landmark 2014 study established a rule we’ve followed ever since: our supplements will always be supported by robust human clinical studies.  That principle is at the heart of Future-Proofed™, the rigorous standards behind every FutureYou Cambridge supplement.

Every FutureYou Cambridge supplement starts with a question: what does the science say?

Answering that question is a big part of Dr Miriam Ferrer’s job. As our Head of Product Development, Miriam draws on more than two decades of experience in scientific research and the life sciences to scrutinise clinical evidence and turn promising research into carefully formulated supplements.

Based in Cambridge, our product development team works with leading ingredient suppliers and research partners around the world. Formulating an effective supplement relies on understanding the evidence, choosing meaningful doses and considering how well the body can absorb them.
