Are you partial to the odd cup of coffee? If so, the good news is that having a cup (or two or three) a day might not actually be as bad for your health as you think. After years of debate as to whether coffee is in fact good or bad for your health, it seems that antioxidant-rich coffee may have made it onto the healthy list once and for all. In fact the latest US Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee states that there is strong evidence that 3-5 cups of coffee (up to 400mg/d caffeine) a day doesn’t cause any harm to your body.
The benefits of coffee for your health
The news (which came as music to many of the Ateronon team’s ears) prompted us to do some research of our own to find out how coffee can help boost our health – and to find out exactly how many cups we should be drinking of the good stuff each day.
1. Coffee and heart health
This recent study South Korean study found that coffee can help give your heart health a boost. The team of researchers at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital discovered that people who drink between 3 and 5 cups of coffee each day are less likely to develop clogged arteries – leaving them less susceptible to heart attack and stroke.
2. Coffee and diabetes risk
Another study into the link between coffee and health showed that increased daily coffee consumption can lead to a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes (which in itself is a strong risk factor for atherosclerosis). In fact, not only did this study led by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) show that those who increased the amount of coffee they drank each day (by more than one cup over a 4-year time frame) had an 11% lower risk for type 2 diabetes, it also showed that participants who decreased their coffee intake by more than one cup a day actually saw their risk of type 2 diabetes increase by 17%!
3. Coffee and erectile dysfunction
In terms of men’s health, one of the more recent coffee-related research studies to be released has shown that drinking 2 cups of coffee a day could boost erectile function. The results, discovered by researchers at the University of Texas showed that men who drank the recommended 2 cups a day were 43% less likely than their non-coffee drinking counterparts to report erectile dysfunction – irrespective of whether they were overweight, obese or suffered from high blood pressure. It’s thought that these results are due to the caffeine in coffee triggering a series of pharmacological effects that help increase blood flow to the penis.
4. Coffee and longer life expectancy
A review of 20 scientific studies carried out by researchers in Japan (including more than 970,000 participants) found that those who regularly drank 3-4 cups of coffee each day were 24% less likely to die from health issues. We really like the sound of these statistics!
